I Pulled the following from a review of the book by a reader: It is a tale in small bits, just a few pages at a time of different battles etc., that troopers of the 82nd Airborne fought through from Africa to Germany. Just one example: the author and other American soldiers with him watch incredulously as at one point of the Anzio battle 900 Germans in perfect formation march toward the American lines---only to be blown to bits by artillery before any of them could reach American lines. They had to know it, yet their officers, their nco's kept leading them on. Like so much of war, that deadly assault made absolutely no sense. This is a personal book, too, since the author went through all those battles. Curious to me, as I have noticed in several other personal books on World War II, is a mention of ghosts, the ghosts of fellow soldiers killed along the way in all those violent battles. The really sad part of this book is that the author fought all the way through World War II only to be die of some fast raging cancer a short time after the war ended. He, in fact, hurried to get this book written before the cancer he knew he had finally did what the Nazis could not do: kill him.
