Description: Fantastic fun and colorful vintage 1960s 70s era crucifix! The antiqued gold tone Jesus is set against a painted orange cross with a lavender or purple background. Truly reminds me of Folk Masses and the new more inclusive catholic church of the Vatican II era. Hardwood plaque measures 8" x 8", Jesus metal figure appears floating in the center and measures 5" tall x 5.25" wide. There is a built in hanging recess on the back of the plaque and the original makers tag reading: Sacred Design by JCC. This unusual crucifix blends the bright colors and optimism of the 1970s alongside the classic sacrifice of Christ. I am sure it is related to the birth of the folk Mass or guitar Mass of the late 1960s. For the first time Catholics were encouraged to sing in church in English and bright colors where introduced in Vestments and church banners. Great gift idea for a friend in a retro home and perfect piece of prop set dressing for a theater or film production. Vatican II from 1962 to 1965 was convened as folk music was exploding in popularity in America and Europe. Artists such as Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seger were causing college students to spontaneously gather in what became known as hootenannies to sing hits like Puff the Magic Dragon and Blowing in the Wind. Soon seminarians and sisters in the early ’60s would also pick up guitars and invite others to sing along at Mass Celebrations. Thanks for looking!
