Together, these texts contextualize Tom’s work in an art historical framework, speak to Tom’s remarkable legacy and continued influence on artistic and queer communities, and underscore Tom’s development and devotion to his craft. Touko Laaksonen a.k.a. Tom of Finland (1920 – 1991) is widely regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential artists for his revolutionary representation of the male figure nudes. His drawings of fantastically muscled hypermasculine men engrossed in homoerotic desire comprise one of the most inventive portrayals of the human body in modern times. These pictures of gay men as virile, confident, and unashamed–equally radical for their underground distribution–originated an empowering queer iconography and liberating spirit that increasingly inspires popular culture; featuring Kake (pronounced KAH-keh), Tom’s recurring alter ego superhero and the original gay leatherman clone. Tom radically hijacked traditional masculine roles; his emboldened cowboys, sailors, and bikers engage in couplings at turns boisterous, erotic, idyllic, and tender. This exhibition surveys the artist’s formative years across works, each selected in close collaboration with the Los Angeles-based Tom of Finland Foundation. These graphite drawings, gouaches, and inked storyboards–the majority of which have never been shown before–broadly trace the evolution of Tom’s exquisite draftsmanship and compositions from his earliest extant erotic works, executed just after serving in the Finnish Army during WWII, through to a complete comic produced in 1972, the year before Tom both earned his first solo exhibition, and retired from his advertising career to devote himself fulltime to his art. Showcases the artist’s diverse material approaches to his meticulous figurations—including sharp pen and marker linework, ink washes, and delicate pencil shading—that exemplify the boldness of his vision and the virtuoso qualities of his hand. With their skillful observation of light and classical composition, and their images of muscular men engaged in complex motions, the drawings reveal formal concerns that call to mind the work of Caravaggio and Rembrandt.
