Half of them carried mostly advertising. These were the shopping guides, sometimes called pennysavers in the Eastern part of the country. The other half were indeed newspapers distributed free of charge to selected people. In their respective communities, these papers competed strenuously with traditional paid circulation newspapers and local radio stations for the advertising dollars spent by hometown merchants. Their being competitive made the free papers especially unpopular among their competitors. Generally speaking, educators in advertising, marketing and journalism paid little or no attention to free circulation papers. Accordingly, the mass media researchers at the universities seldom investigated these publications. There was evidence that many professionals in our nation’s multi-billion-dollar national advertising business did not believe in buying space in the free papers. Why not? Partly because too many people in advertising did not know enough about these particular papers. No doubt some of these advertising professionals didn't realize that they were missing out on an aggregate national readership of 30 million...
