State Birds

Description: Beginning in alphabetical order the birds of all fifty states are beautifully illustrated, with both the common and scientific name and general information about the bird. Vibrant illustrations with the birds in their natural habitats make this the perfect book for the young bird lover. Arthur Bernard Singer (1917 – 1990) while still in his early twenties, in 1942, was offered the opportunity to exhibit of his animal illustration work by the New York Zoological Society but shortly thereafter he was drafted into the US Army where he served in Company C of the 603rd Camouflage Engineers, which was part of the Ghost Army. Upon his return to civilian life, he went on to becoming an acclaimed wildlife artist who primarily specialized in bird illustrations. He illustrated for magazines and for more than 20 books. In 1982 the US Postal Service asked him to illustrate a set of fifty official state bird and flower stamps, which he designed and illustrated with his son Alan. Alan, his youngest son, completed the flower illustrations. The series became the precursor to this book and the stamps were also highly popular, selling 500 million sheets and over 25 billion individual stamps. Interestingly, although he devoted his life to studying birds, he had a passion for jazz and would take forays into Harlem in the 1930’s to hear the best musicians and learn the latest dances. He made friends with Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, who was illustrated by the 15-year-old artist with a portrait entirely made up of calligraphy that used the name of every piece in the musician’s repertory. Alan Singer (1950 – ) is a painter, printmaker, lecturer and educator. He began exhibiting his paintings while still in college at The Cooper Union in New York City. Through college and graduate school at Cornell University he won scholarships and created works of distinction. Along with exhibitions, his artwork has been featured in museums such as the Everson in Syracuse, and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. He is currently a professor of art in the School of Art, College of Imaging Arts & Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
