Swichkow served as spiritual leader of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After forty-eight years in that congregation, he became Rabbi Emeritus. Rabbi Swichkow was ordained by the Hebrew Theological College of Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from De Paul University and a Master of Arts degree from Marquette University. He attained his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Marquette University and the degree of Doctor of Hebrew Letters from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. The Seminary awarded him an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He was a member of the Rabbinical Assembly of America from 1953 until his death in 2003. Rabbi Swichkow is the author of Counting Our Blessings (1991), comprising the annual cycle of weekly Sabbath sermons, Invocations (1951),Invocations "D'var Torah" Supplement (1997). He was the author (with Lloyd P. Gartner) of The History of the Jews of Milwaukee, A History of the B'nai B'rith in Milwaukee -Wisconsin's Oldest Jewish Fraternal Organization, and various articles on Wisconsin Jewish history. In addition, he contributed to articles and reviews in American Jewish History, the Encyclopedia Judaica and Michael, published by the Diaspora Research Institute of Tel Aviv. He was the recipient of an award by the Milwaukee County Historical Society for his contributions to the history of Milwaukee.
