SCARCE Large, Original Antique 1904 Taber Prang Chromolithograph "Burning Arrow"

Description: CONDITION: Strong color, no holes or tears, but lesser damages (scratches, water stain on right side and foxing) as can be seen in my detail photos. This was not removed from its frame and all photos were taken through glass. Some reflections may appear. FRAME SIZE: 30" wide x 24" high “Burning Arrow” is one of the most beautiful American Indian antique lithographs ever published. This is a Chromolithograph which is characterized by rich, saturated color. It was published in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts by one of America’s finest lithographers, the Tabor Prang Art Company. The image had to be divided into its component colors and each individual color was printed using a separate limestone plate. Every layer of color needed perfect registration. Depending on the number of colors present, a chromolithograph could require up to 40 limestone plates and take months to produce. THE PRINTER Louis Prang was a German-born entrepreneur who felt that quality art should not be limited to the elite. However, although a chromolithograph may have been cheaper than a painting, it was still expensive in comparison to an offset lithograph, and chromolithographic printmaking died out in the 1930s. THE ARTIST Astley David Middleton (A.D.M.) Cooper (American, 1856-1924) is best known for his depictions of indigenous peoples with whom he lived in the American West when he was in his early twenties. "Burning Arrow" depicts a group of warriors using a flaming arrow to signal their movements to a distant Indian camp during the Great Sioux War (known for the famous Battle of Little Big Horn). Cooper's models for this painting were actual Sioux Indians. Bull Head (son of Sitting Bull) is the man firing the arrow; Chief Hard Heart is standing with his back to the fire; Sitting Bear is on the ground sitting watching the arrow in flight; Lone Wolf, Buffalo Head, Standing Bear, and the remaining two Indians in the background are unnamed. Cooper first exhibited "Burning Arrow" -- a huge, 9 x 12 feet painting -- in San Francisco in 1900. It was again exhibited in 1901 at the Pan American Exposition of 1901 in Buffalo, New York. At that time, Louis Prang secured the right to reproduce the work as a chromolithograph.
