Description: EXTREMELY RARE FISCHER J BUDAPEST HUNGARY HAND PAINTED & GILT 14" VASE W/ CHERUB MEDALLION - CIRCA 1885 Measures approximately 14" high by 4 7/8" in diameter. Signed on the underside with printed "Fischer J Budapest Hungary" lion and shield mark as well as an impressed "Fischer J Budapest" mark - see photos. Excellent original condition with the exception of one, tiny fleabite on the top rim (see photos) and some craquelure on the body of the vase. There are no other chips, cracks or repairs. Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873. Fischer's pieces bear the mark “Fischer J.” with the “J” being the same letter as “I” in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
