RARE ANTIQUE FIGURAL 1937 BRITISH CORONATION COACH BISCUIT TIN & TOY

Description: RARE ANTIQUE FIGURAL 1937 BRITISH CORONATION COACH W & R JACOB & CO BISCUIT TIN RARE ANTIQUE FIGURAL 1937 BRITISH CORONATION COACH W & R JACOB & CO BISCUIT TIN & TOY RARE ANTIQUE FIGURAL 1937 BRITISH CORONATION COACH BISCUIT TIN TOY BY W. AND R. JACOB &CO. British biscuit companies vied to dominate the market with new products and eye-catching packaging that saw British biscuits exported around the world. Many regions of the world have their own distinct style of biscuit due to the historic prominence of this extremely popular form of food, and their global reach was reflected in their advertising. Competition and innovation among British firms saw 49 patent applications for biscuit-making equipment, tins, dough-cutting machines, and ornamental molds between 1897 and 1900. This is a rare W & R Jacob and Co. "British Coronation Coach" biscuit tin, Coronation memorabilia, Keepsake, and perhaps a toy for a fortunate child. It was manufactured in preparation for Edward VIII's 1937 coronation before he abdicated the British Throne. Although this piece originally held biscuits, it was a limited edition figural intended for display for historians, international admirers of the Royal Family, as well as those interested in the so-called scandal of a King abdicating the English throne to marry a twice divorced American socialite. This figural Coronation coach biscuit tin is 8 5/8” long x 2 5/8” wide and 5” tall to the top of the crown. Weight is 7.2 inches or 206 grams. Note the 3 side windows on each side of the carriage are made to simulate glass. As expected, this piece was openly display for long period of time, and thus shows fading overall to the color that is very difficult to capture in the images, even with auto color, auto contrast and manual adjustment software. The color could be enhanced by a restorer, but has been left in untouched, as found condition. There is naturally occurring aging (rust) overall to the tin that is highly susceptible to moisture and sunlight. All the pieces are intact, and the wheels roll freely, and this could have been passed down to a child as a treasured toy and keep sake. There is only one small ding on the top that appears as a dark spot. Among biscuit tin collectors, figural tins are top of the line. This applies to Historical tins, and especially the 1937 Royal Wedding Coronation coach tin. Note that this piece came from a large collection of British biscuit tins, and with the purchase, there was an old full page photocopy (of poor quality) of a notice in a 1984 publication hand noted as ATW, with the Header, “British Biscuit Tins to be sold at Philips, New York”, stating “Intense interest from American collectors is expected at a sale of British Biscuit Tins to be held at Phillips, New York on Saturday, August 25 (1984). This page shows an identical Coronation coach tin (with the box) in the listing, and states, “this sale will afford the buyer a chance to compliment his collection with some very rare examples of a fascinating marketing technique”. The W & R Jacob & Co. Coronation coach is one such piece. A copy of this page will be included with purchase. W. & R. JACOB AND CO. HISTORY The originator of the Jacob's brand name was the small biscuit bakery, W. & R. Jacob, founded in 1851 in Bridge Street, Waterford, Ireland, by William Beale Jacob and his brother Robert. It later moved to Bishop Street in Dublin, Ireland, with a factory in Peter's Row. Jacob's Bishop Street premises was one of several prominent Dublin buildings occupied by rebels during the Easter Rising of 1916. Jacob's first English factory was opened in 1914 in Aintree, Liverpool. In 1922, a separate English company was formed, W. & R. Jacob, Liverpool Ltd. The two branches separated, with the Dublin branch retaining the W & R Jacob name while the Liverpool branch was renamed Jacob's Bakery Ltd. In the 1970s, W & R Jacob in Dublin merged with Boland's Biscuits to form Irish Biscuits Ltd. and moved to Tallaghat, a Dublin suburb. The Liverpool factory joined Associated Biscuits in 1960, which was purchased by Nabisco in 1982. KING EDWARD VIII HISTORY Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David (b. 6 23 1894-d.5 28 1972) was King of the United Kingdom British Empire and Emperor of India from January 20th, 1936, until his abdication of the throne in December of the same year. Edward was born during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Edward was the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary. He was given the title Prince of Wales on his 16th birthday. He served in the Royal Navy and Air force and undertook several overseas tours of duty during WWI. He gained popularity due to his charm and charisma. After the war, his conduct began to give cause for concern as he engaged in a series of sexual affairs. After his father’s death in 1936, Edward became King Edward VIII. The new king showed impatience with court protocol and caused concern among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. Only months into his reign, he caused a constitutional crisis with his proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American Socialite who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second husband. The prime ministers opposed the marriage, arguing a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective Queen Consort, and the marriage would have conflicted with Edward's status as Head of the Church of England, which disapproved of remarriage after divorce if a former spouse was still alive. Edward knew if the marriage went ahead, it could have forced a general election and would have ruined his status as a politically neutral constitutional monarch, and he abdicated the Throne. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI, whose reign lasted only 326 days. After his abdication, Edward became the Duke of Windsor, and married Simpson in France on June 3, 1937, after her second divorce became final. Edward as stationed with the British Military during WWII, and after the fall of France, was appointed Governor of the Bahamas. After the war, Edward spent the rest of his life in France. He and Wallis had no children, remained married until his death in 1972. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller.
