Punch Cartoon WW 1 - GREAT BRITAIN WAR-TIME DAYLIGHT SAVINGS - 1916 War-Effort

Description: British Punch magazine -- from 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for historians.Illustrator: L. Raven-hill, from British Punch humor/satire magazine, May 10, 1916, disbound from the magazine, not a modern reproduction. Size 8 x 10 1/2 inches. Condition: excellent-- bright and clean, no handling wear, lays flat for ease of framing, backside with unrelated text with some show-though on the facing side.WAKE UP, ENGLAND! The Sun (to householder). "Now, why waste your daylight? Save it and give it to the country," [If only for the sake of economy in artificial light during war-time, the daylight-saving scheme should have the support of all patriots.] --This cartoon shows the sun bursting through a man's bedroom window during WW1--In 1916, during World War I, Germany was the 1st country in the world to use DST nationwide, and the UK followed just weeks later. To save energy and help the war effort, the Summer Time Act 1916 advanced the clocks in the UK for 1 hour from May 21 until October 1 in the same year. I have other hard-to-find original Punch cartoon illustrations for sale; combine orders with no extra shipping fees.Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. QUESTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.
