COVER PREPARED BY TEMPORARY POSTMASTER ALAN W. MOVERLEY EXCELLENT CONDITION FINE CONDITION - GENTLE 3cm TEAR AT LEFT SIDE OF FLAP LIGHT CREASE ABOVE LOWER-LEFT CORNER ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE COVER: is a regular-size O.H.M.S. envelope, dated 12 June 1949, addressed to the well-known Manchester stamp dealer, J.E. Lea. Moverly's initials "A.W.M." appear at the lower left corner with a second Pitcairn postmark (Kitching type 2.3). KEY DATES of 1947-1949 in PITCAIRN's SOCIAL HISTORY: • 1947 (19 May) - arrival of Frederick Percival Ward & Mrs Myrtle Ward on RANGITATA. This was their second tour of mission duty, he to serve as Pastor and Island Schoolteacher, she to assist with nursing. • 1948 (July 21) - arrival of Pitcairn's first Government-appointed schoolteacher, Alan W. Moverly and his family, from Fiji, on the steamer AWAHOU. • 1949 (1 January) - departure of Postmaster Roy Palmer Clark and his wife, Hyacinth May, on the EMPIRE STAR, for New Zealand, where Roy would undergo medical treatment. • 1949 (28 September) - return of the Clarks on RANGITITI after Roy's successful medical care. After Moverly's arrival at Pitcairn, there was an immediate confrontation between Moverly, an atheist, and Pastor Ward, who incorporated his Church's Seventh Day Adventist teachings and philosophy into his classes at the school. Moverly gathered up all of the Church's books and literature he could find, and threw them into the sea! Before he left for New Zealand, Clark appointed both men to be Assistant Postmasters at the island Post Office, given that the long-awaited new Royal Silver Wedding stamp issue was due to be serviced on 1 August 1949, and the UPU 75th Anniversary issue was due for release on 10 October 1949. There would be plenty of work to do! GALASALES - IT'S ABOUT CHOICE - COUNT ON US ® !!
