Description: EXTRA INFOPHOTO THE SEWING ROOM ON THE STRAY THE BUILDING HERE IS NOW OCCUPIED BY A SHOP CALLED 'THE SEWING ROOM'. IT COVERED A CHALYBEATE SPRING ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS 'THE SWEET SPA'. THE SPRING WAS DISCOVERED IN 1631 BY DR STANHOPE WHO DESCRIBED IT IN HIS 'CURES WITHOUT CARE' OF 1632. A STONE COVERING WAS PROVIDED IN 1656 AND THE FIRST PUMP ROOM WAS BUILT IN 1786. THE PRESENT BUILDING WAS ERECTED IN 1842 TO A DESIGN BY THE ARCHITECT OF THE ROYAL PUMP ROOM. THE STRAY WAS CREATED IN 1778 TO LINK TOGETHER MOST OF HARROGATE'S SPRINGS IN ONE PROTECTED AREA BY AN ACT OF PARLIAMENT WHICH FIXED ITS AREA AS 200 ACRES. IT IS EVEN MARKED AS 'TWO HUNDRED ACRE' ON MAPS.
