It was like a little Goldman, a swiss company that makes some of the most expensive amplifiers that I have seen (we're talking house price level here). Whether they are some of the best would be difficult to answer since audio quality is very subjective and there are a lot of very expensive amplifiers out there. This amplifier originally retailed at $1299 but at only 80W few people were interested. Once in a while I still see STA-200s at around $1000 from people that no doubt paid close to this amount. Later, before they stopped selling it, Optoma lowered the price to $499. That I could afford. At that time I was buying a lot of different amplifiers to find out what what different amplifiers sounded like and what qualities I liked. I bought this amplifier to see how it compared to the other amplifiers I had bought. Amplifiers like Proceed, Bryston, Simaudio, Adcom, NAD. Folks, if you like good quality sound but can't afford to spend $4000 on a new, $1000-2000 on a used, good quality hifi amplifier, this will give you a taste of that. I have sold all my amplifiers and am actually using it as my main amplifier so I know it works. And it works very well. I almost don't even miss my Simaudio W-5 amplifier I sold. Actually, that's a lie, I do miss it but that was a $4800 new, $2000 used amplifier. This compares well to that and my Bryston etc. It's about budget. If your budget maxes out at $500 but you wish you could afford a good quality $2000-4000 amplifier I think you will not be disappointed. Also, this amplifier has very high gain so it could probably be pushed by a DAC or something like that that has a volume control. I am using it with a passive Schiit preamp and it kicks pretty good volume. Not that it matters much but I am shipping from Fond du Lac, WI, not Madison WI.
