NY Settler Thaddeus Joy Provided Relief For Battle Of Niagara Falls Victims

Description: The BATTLE OF LUNDY’S LANE, also known as the BATTLE OF NIAGARA FALLS, was fought on July 25, 1814 during the War of 1812 between an invading American army and a British and Canadian army near present day Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was one of the bloodiest battles of the war with more than 1,700 casualties, including 258 killed. The two armies fought each other to a stalemate; neither side held firm control of the field, but the casualties suffered by the Americans precipitated their withdrawal and the British held the strategic initiative. The New York State Legislature felt that federal government needed to do more to assist people whose homes and businesses were destroyed. A resolution was passed imploring their U.S. Senators and Representatives to adopt adequate measures to provide relief to the so-called “Niagara sufferers.” [Research included]The document offered here by THADDEUS JOY, an early New York state settler who frequently lectured about the development of New York, indicates that Joy was involved in helping to finance relief for those who suffered property destruction during the War of 1812.One-page, 7 ½ x 13, ADS by Joy speaking of the “Niagara suffering.” He writes, “...I...am associated with Moses Bristol of Buffalo as one of the commissioners under an act of the Legislature to the state of New York passed in April 1824, entitled an act for the relief of the Niagara suffering, did loan to Ira Joy six hundred dollars out of the money collected by the said commissioners under the above act for the security of which I took the annexed bond and Mortgage from the said Ira Joy; I also received from Freeman James a note for four hundred dollars or thereabouts secured by a bill of sale for a quantity of household furniture located in the Steamboat Hotel so called in the Village of Buffalo...and also one other note against Lemuel L. Downs for one hundred dollars all of which for the benefit of the families arising from under the said act, to which the whole of evidence of debt above...I do now assign, transfer...unto Moses Bristol...all my right, title, interest and claim...”Folds, even toning.
