Description: Original 2" x 3.5" imprinted visiting card in Roman letters.Nikolai Nikolayevich Figner (1857-1918) was one of the greatest tenors ever produced in Russia. Together with his wife Medea they were opera royalty and not just in Russia. He studied with Everardi and Pryanishkov in St. Petersburg and having moved his family to Italy finished with Emanuele de Roxas in Naples. He made his stage debut there in 1882. After abandoning his wife and children in Naples, he sung throughout Italy and Spain meeting up with Medea Figner who became his mistress and later his wife. Whilst on tour in South America, he was the Radames in the 1886 "Aida" conducting debut of Arturo Toscanini's in Rio de Janiero. A year later he returned to Russia with his soon to be bride Medea Mey and based upon the reviews of their performances on both sides of the Atlantic they were immediately signed in 1887. The two became opera royalty and he was awarded the title of Imperial soloist to the Tsar in 1895. He created two roles for his friend Piotr Tchaikovsky, Ghermann in "Pikova Dama", Count Vaudemont in "Iolanta. For Eduard Napravnik, the Music Director of the Imperial Opera he created the title role of his opera "Dubrovsky" and Paolo in his "Francesca da Rimini" both with his wife Medea. He divorced Medea in 1904 and remained with the Mariinsky until 1906. He then tried his hand at directing his own opera company, only to join the People's Nation Opera in 1910 eventually becoming the Director of the company. All of Figner's wives were Jewish and he had children with all of them. He married for a third time to the soprano Rene Radina around 1909 and had two additional daughters. Nikolai moved his family to Kiev in 1917 and taught singing passing away from complications due to diabetes in 1918. Rene interestingly left Russia in 1929 and lived there without problem until her death in 1944.
