MELVYN DOUGLAS - DOCUMENT SIGNED 08/07/1931 - HFSID 265457 MELVYN DOUGLAS Melvyn Douglas signs letter of agreement with Samuel Goldwyn Inc. Typed Document Signed: "Melvyn Douglas" under "Approved and Accepted", 1p, 8½x10¾. Los Angeles, California, 1931 August 7. Referencing the commencement of Douglas' employment with Samuel Goldwyn's studios. In letter form to Douglas, c/o Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd., Los Angeles, California. Begins: "Dear Mr. Douglas". In full: "Referring to that certain agreement between us dated February 9, 1931, and particularly to Paragraph 1 thereof, this will confirm the understanding and agreement between us that the term of your employment for the period provided for in said Paragraph 1 shall definitely commence on August 8th 1931. If the foregoing is in accordance with your understanding will you kindly indicate your approval and acceptance thereof in the space herein-below provided." Initialed: "M.D." by Douglas next to employment date. Also signed by the Vice-President of Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd. In the year he signed this document, Douglas made his film debut in Samuel Goldwyn's 1931 film, Tonight or Never, an early "talkie". Four years later, he would sign a joint contract with Columbia and M-G-M. Melvyn Douglas (1901-1981), born Melvyn Edouard Hesselberg, won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for Being There (1979) and his portrayal of Paul Newman's dying father in Hud (1963), and he was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for I Never Sang for My Father (1970). Although Douglas began his acting career on the stage, he would grace the big screen for 50 years, beginning in 1931, the year he signed this contract. His long list of feature film credits include Annie Oakley (1935), Captains Courageous (1937), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), The Americanization of Emily (1964), The Graduate (1965), The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979) and Being There (1979), and Douglas also appeared in a number of made-for-TV films. He died at the age of 80, just before the release of his final film, Ghost Story (1981). Douglas was married to Helen Gahagan Douglas (1900-1980), a stage actress and 3-term U.S. Representative from California who was defeated by future President Richard Nixon in a bid for the U.S. Senate after a legendarily nasty campaign (1950). Slightly creased. 2 paper clip rust stains at upper blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
