Description: Manihot esculenta is a small tree in the Euphorbiaceae family. Its native range is from western South America to Brazil. Familiar names include Tapioca Plant, Cassava, Yuca, Manioc, and Mandioca. It is cultivated for its roots which are a good source of carbohydrates. The starch is extracted from the roots and is called tapioca. Tapioca is used worldwide and is the third most consumed starch globally, behind potatoes and rice. A fast-growing tree that can get 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide in one season. I cut mine to the ground year, and it always returned the following year in zone 8. The leaves are beautiful with red ribs and large. The flowers are relatively small, around a half-inch in diameter. The seeds that form are green for a few months then suddenly start to split. The seeds explode, and the seeds go flying 10-15 feet away from the tree. It prefers to grow in full sun with average water needs. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Zones 8-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
