Whatever the rights or wrongs of that statement from a long gone writer one thing is certain, British troops did cross the Tugela in 1879 and in that year experienced disastrous defeats and victories of undying glory. Overshadowing all other actions, are the stands made by the men of the South Wales Borders, the 24th of foot, first at Isandhlwana on the January 22, 1879, and later the same day and the following night at Rorkes Drift, a mission station at a crossing on the Tugela river. For action and vitality they may never be surpassed, this glorious moment in history has been cought for all time in the superb movement and bearing of these Sigures. The facial features of these men of the 24th foot and their Zulu opponents, the delicate moulding of their hands, their superb equipment and weaponery has been loudly acclaimed in all the modelling press. Singly or in groups these figures hold pride of place in any collection. The "Battle of Rorke's Drift" (aka Defence of Rorke's Drift) was an engagement in the Anglo-Zulu War. The successful British defense of the mission station of Rorke's Drift, under the command of Lieutenants John Chard of the Royal Engineers and Gonville Bromhead, of the 24th Regiment of Foot began when a large contingent of Zulu warriors broke off from the main force during the final hour of the British defeat at the day-long Battle of Isandlwana on January 22, 1879, diverting 6 miles (9.7 km) to attack Rorke's Drift later that day and continuing into the following day. Just over 150 British and colonial troops defended the station against attacks by 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu warriors. The massive but piecemeal attacks by the Zulu on Rorke's Drift came very close to overwhelming the much smaller garrison, but were consistently repelled.Frank Hinchliffe began the company Hinchliffe Models in 1967 producing larger scale artillery and equipment. These were often monstrous heavy cast metal kits that required a fair amount of assembly. At some point, figure sculptor Peter Gilder (recently of Miniature Figurines) came on board and began the range of historical figures in 25mm; apparently meant to look imposing against the then current HO/OO scale figures put out by Airfix (est. 22mm). Initially, Frank's brother Bob handled the commercial aspects of the business from his Cheshire home, whilst Frank handled design and production in Meltham. In 1969, Norman Newton Ltd became sole agents for Hinchliffe Models and Bob Hinchliffe appears to have moved on soon thereafter. The range expanded rapidly to cover artillery and wagons in 54mm, 30mm and 20mm, and these were sold via Rose Miniatures and Tradition. Frank teamed up with Peter Gilder to produce 25mm wargame figures, and the rapidly expanded Hinchliffe Models. Hinchliffe continued to pursue his interest in larger scale models by commissioning pieces from Charles Stadden, Cliff Sanderson, Dave Jarvis, Ray Lamb, Julian Bennassi, D. Roberts and Dave Sparrow to create a healthy inventory of 30/54/75/90 and 150mm figures. Other well known names that passed through Hinchliffe during the 1970s include Trevor Dixon and Norman Swales.Your shipment will arrive via USPS Priority Mail (1-4 business days) or USPS Ground Advantage (2-5 business days), after the 2-3 day processing time (upon paid purchase)Shipment(s) sent out of Lemon Grove, California, USAWE CAN COMBINE-SHIP - ASK US FIRST!Will be packed very well - READ OUR FEEDBACK!No Returns ***AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT AFTER PURCHASE, WHICH MAY REFLECT A MORE ACCURATE POSTAGE RATE FOR THIS ITEM - DON'T PASS THIS UP YET!
