This listing is for one (1) live, bare-root Ferocactus gracilis, also known as Red Spine Barrel cactus or Fire Barrel cactus. It has been grown in a nursery environment in a 6” plastic pot. It will be approximately 4” tall by 3.5” in diameter (not including the spines) and about 14” in circumference. It will be shipped to you bare-root (no soil or container) and will be ready for immediate planting. General care instructions will be provided. Red Spine Barrel (also known as Fire Barrel) is one of the most striking of the Ferocactus family. Its beautiful dark green colored fleshy ribs are very symmetrical with spine clusters lining the crest of each rib and lateral, thread-like white spines off of each cluster, providing shade for the green flesh underneath. The main spines are bright red in color and when the sunlight reflects off of them it illuminates fantastically with a red hue! These grow in a globular shape and can reach 18” in diameter at maturity. The photo gallery includes one picture of a mature plant (image 10) to give you an idea of how this cactus will look in years to come. Bright red colored flowers form on its apex in the summer and they are very attractive! The flower is followed by a yellow fruit / seed pod. This specimen should be part of any cacti enthusiast's garden! It loves full or partial sunlight conditions but this has been grown in a partial shade environment so should be introduced to full sun slowly in order to acclimate. It grows well in containers and is cold hardy to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Pictures in the gallery are representative of the plant you will receive, but may not be the exact one in the images.
