Lomir zingen a yiddish lid Let's sing a Yiddish song. We are happy to bring you this collection of Yiddish songs. They are yours to enjoy and the only way to really enjoy a song is to sing it. In making our selection, we were aware of the fact that, no matter how much you read in history books, much of the inner history of a people reveals itself through its songs. We went back to the songs which your parents, grandparents yes, and great-grandparents used to sing. (We also included many songs which were sung in secular schools, both here abroad, since these schools came into being at the beginning of this century.) We have divided this book into several sections: In the Shule; Let Us Sing; Jewish Holidays; All Brothers; Ghetto Songs; In the Shtetl; Israel; Love Songs. . . . We hope that eventually you will have sampled all of them. The transliteration should be helpful to those are not able to read the Yiddish or the Hebrew text. The translations are very important, although they are not singable, since the songs should only be sung in their original language. The purpose of the translation is only to help you understand the meaning of each song. A song is truly enjoyed when its meaning is fully understood. We do hope that by learning the songs you will also learn some of the language in which they were written, a rather pleasing way to learn Yiddish. There were poets who wrote these songs. Their names should not be forgotten. Tsum Hemerl, for example, was written by Abraham Reisen they should be remembered together. Here, then, is a small gateway to the inner life of your people. We do hope you will learn to know them just a little better through these songs. Generations have poured their hearts into them. If you will begin to feel closer to the lives of grandparents and great-grandparents through these songs whether in the shtetl or in the sweat-shop, if you learn to admire a love-song which a great-grandfather sang to a great-grandmother or how they dreamt of brotherhood or yearned for peace, if you become more aware of the life of the people in Israel today, or the suffering and heroism of Jews in the ghetto, or the way they celebrated a holiday which we still celebrate today if you learn all this, or at least some of it, if you make these songs your own, this book will have served its purpose. Above all, songs are fun and should be enjoyed. SoLomir zingen a Yiddish lid. [gsp9277] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
