Description: A BOOK OF COMMANDMENTS Facsimile, Regular Edition by Scrub Oak Press (2010) Description: This facsimile of the 1833 "Book of Commandments" (16mo. 160 pp.), #32/100 Regular Edition replica, is bound in a full leather brown calfskin binding with gilt rules on the spine. An accompanying volume, "A Note on the Book of Commandments" by Peter Crawley (16mo. 32pp.) is backed in calfskin with marbled-paper boards. Both volumes are enclosed in a full cloth clamshell box with morocco label on the spine. This replica edition was created with accuracy to the original 1833 edition in mind, using handmade paper and book-binding techniques that are faithful to 19th century practices and designed in imitation of the binding of a specific, known, extant copy, making this reproduction as close to the "real thing" as possible. This example is in Fine or Near Fine condition, with no noticeable or significant flaws or defects. Additional photos and information upon request. History: The Book of Commandments (1833) was the first collection of Joseph Smith's prophetic revelations following the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the publication of the Book of Mormon. It preceded the book of Doctrine and Covenants and was largely reproduced in that latter volume of scripture, with some organizational and content changes. The original printing of the Book of Commandments was nearly completely destroyed when the Saint's printing house was sacked by an anti-Mormon mob, and the unbound sheets destroyed, with some few Sheets being scattered out the windows and onto the street below. Among others, Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner, a future plural wife of the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith, gathered up unbound sheets of the printing during the attack. These sheets were eventually bound into volumes, individually, by devout members of the Church, making each volume unique. Note: Currently extant are only 29 known copies made from the salvaged sheets. Crawley's "Note," written expressly for this edition and only available in this edition, offers a history and bibliography of the book, as well as a thorough census of these extant copies. The original Book of Commandments is breathtakingly scarce and has become known as the "Holy Grail" of Mormon book collecting. With all but 9 of the 29 copies held by institutions, original copies become available to collectors the market.
