Jyobangozen, Yukigyo no zu Hanging scroll, 110.0cm x 53.0cm (total length 207cm x 69cm), in paulownia wood box Tokiwa was a lady-in-waiting to Emperor Konoe's wife Kujoin (Fujiwara no Yoshiko). She is said to have been the most beautiful of the ten. She later became a concubine (concubine) of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, and gave birth to Imawaka (later Ano Zennari), Otowaka (later Yoshien), and Ushiwaka (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune). She became a widow at the age of 23 when she was killed during the Heiji Disturbance when Yoshitomo became a rebel and fled the country. She then fled with her children through the snow and arrived in Yamato Province. Later, she learned that her mother, who remained in the capital, had been captured and went to the presence of her master Kujoin (“Heiji Monogatari”), and then presented herself to Kiyomori. When she surrenders herself to Kiyomori, Tokiwa begs for her mother's life and begs him to kill her first because she cannot bear to see her children killed, even though it is inevitable that they will be killed. Kiyomori, moved by Tokiwa's beauty and her appearance, is said to have spared Imawaka, Otowaka, and Ushiwaka on the grounds that Yoritomo had already decided to spare their lives. This is the famous picture of Tokiwa Gozen Yukigyo. The boy on the left is Imawaka (later Ano Zennari). The boy on the right is Otowaka (later Yoshien). Ushiwaka (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) is holding in his arms. In this scene, they are marching in the snow with three small children toward Yamato on a roadless road in the snow. There are some creases, sagging, and bowing. The inscription on the paulownia box reads “Shizugozen.
