Fought three months after the Civil War ended on July 26, 1865 in Wyoming, the Battle of Platte Bridge, also known as Red Buttes, was one of the bloodiest battles of the wars with the Plains Indians with 29 soldiers killed in an ambush and attack on army wagon train by Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. The only book written on the battle, this was published in 1963 and is a good and detailed account of the battle. J. W. Vaughn (1903-1968) was a Colorado attorney whose avocation was research on battlefields where U.S. troops had engaged Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, research employing contemporary maps, modern aerial maps, and a metal detector. He also authored The Battle of Platte Bridge and Indian Fights: New Facts on Seven
