ILLYA DARLING PLAY CAST - SHOW BILL SIGNED CIRCA 1967 CO-SIGNED BY: MELINA MERCOURI, ORSON BEAN - HFSID 25709 ILLYA DARLING: MELINA MERCOURI and ORSON BEAN Show bill for the 1967 production of Illya Darling at the O'Keefe Center for the Performing Arts in Toronto, signed by Mercouri and Bean on the cover. Mercouri, who made her Broadway debut in this play, appeared in the title role of Illya, while Bean appeared as Homer Thrace. Show bill signed "Melina Mercouri" and "Hi!/Orson Bean". B/w with b/w and red cover and 2 color pages, 28 pages (including covers), 5x8. Program for the play Illya Darling at the O'Keefe Center for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, January 31 to February 18, 1967. This play was the 1965 musical version of the film Never on Sunday, in which Mercouri, as Illya, made her Broadway debut. Bean co-starred as Homer Thrace. Jules Dassin, who directed Never on Sunday, directed this production and wrote the book. In 1960, MERCOURI (1920-1994) gained international stardom for her portrayal of a vivacious Piraeus prostitute in the film Never on Sunday. It was directed by Jules Dassin, who directed several of her subsequent films (1964's Topkapi being the best) and, in 1966, became her second husband. Mercouri vehemently protested when Greece was taken over by military junta in 1966, and her citizenship was revoked. In 1977, she returned to her former home and was elected to the Greek Parliament. From 1981 to 1985, Mercouri served as Greece's Minister of Culture and Sciences, and from 1985-1989 was her country's Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. Landing on Broadway in the 1953 production Men of Distinction, BEAN (1928-2020), won a Theatre World Award for his work in the 1954 revue Almanac, and Critics' Circle Awards for his performances in Mister Roberts and Say Darling. His later stage credits included Broadway's Subways are for Sleeping (1962) and Never Too Late (1964), not to mention his extensive tours in the musical Promises, Promises. In films from 1955, Bean's best-received screen performance was as the testifying army physician in Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder (1959). A major presence on TV, Bean has participated in numerous quiz shows and syndicated series. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. Lightly scuffed on right and bottom edge and along spine. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: ILLYA DARLING PLAY CAST ORSON BEAN MELINA MERCOURI See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (12,502) category.
