Craig Kupka, instrumental music director at Hoover, said the orchestra -- made of up 32 students -- ranked first in the studio jazz orchestra division of the 2002 competition. More than 500 schools nationwide participated in the competition by submitting CDs of three recorded songs. Hoover’s group submitted their recordings of “Spain” by Chick Corea, a medley of “In A Silent Way” and “Milestones” by Miles Davis and an original student composition called “Elegy.” The group spent three weeks recording the material for the competition. Their name will be published in Downbeat Magazine and each student received a certificate for participating.
