Description: HOCKING COUNTY, OHIO Early days in Hocking County, OH, and the communities of Logan, Haydenville, Carbon Hill, Laurelville, Murray City, Millville, and South Bloomingville, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 17 Page Booklet of excerpts reproduced from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a WPA Writers project) and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is printed single-sided on quality paper with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover. Illustrations include Logan's Main Street as it looked in 1891, a view of Logan drawn in 1846, and an 1889 photo of Rock Bridge. Among the many and diverse topics covered in the booklet: origin of the name Hocking; early settlers; settling disputes; picturesque areas, including Ash Cave, Rock House, Dead Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Rock Bridge and Saltpetre Cave, and Thieve's Cave; a shelter for stolen horses; memoirs of a 104-year-old veteran who served with Napoleon; and a trip to the Hocking Valley Coal Mines. The history of newspapers in the county, an "updated" 1940 view of the area in the WPA guide, a map showing all 88 Ohio counties and a map of Ohio as it appeared in 1805 are also included. Genealogy buffs will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses. Wouldn't this make a unique gift?
