In this exhibition, we will exhibit four large-format color works from the "Opticks" series, which were presented at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art last year. The series began with a recreation of Isaac Newton''s prism experiments, and took Sugimoto 15 years to complete using the latest technology. NEWTON''S OPTICKS, PUBLISHED IN 1704, DISCOVERED THAT SUNLIGHT, WHICH WAS THOUGHT TO BE WHITE, WAS COMPOSED OF MULTIPLE COLORS SUCH AS RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO, AND PURPLE BY PRISMS. Sugimoto improved on the observation device invented by Newton and recorded the colors themselves spectralized through a prism with Polaroid film. Polaroids, which are baked with infinite gradations that appear in the gaps between colors, are finished in large-format prints using digital technology. Sugimoto says, "I feel that it is only between colors that have been discarded that we can feel the world, and now that scientific cognition no longer needs God, I have come to think that the role of art is to scoop up the world that spills out of it. I decided to use Polaroid film, which I don''t have much time left to live, to capture the gaps between the colors." He said.
