Villeneuve’s desperate efforts with his ill-handling Ferrari had taken a toll on his tyres and brakes and knowing he could no longer stay with Jabouille he eased his pace slightly so second place was his sole intent but Rene Arnoux was closing up. Steadily climbing through the pack, Rene had been encouraged by pit signals whilst hampered by fuel starvation, he was gaining at around 1.5 seconds a lap, so with 10 laps remaining Villeneuve’s position was in jeopardy. On the next lap the Ferrari lapped backmarkers more easily than the Renault, then they were together again for two laps. On lap 77 it looked like it was going to be a Renault 1-2 as Arnoux got ahead but the battle wasn’t over. Gilles was back in front on the 79th lap, then side by side they started the last lap, into the first corner, side by side they came out. Neither giving way, both throwing caution to the wind, banging wheels as they dived into the back leg. Villeneuve was inside at the hairpin, Rene got in front as they climbed out of the dip but the Renault engine stuttered and the Ferrari was instantly alongside. Over the brow of the hill they went, still rubbing tyres, but with the Ferrari on the inside for the final bend. Down the last dip they were virtually touching, nose to tail, up the hill the Renault pulled out over the brow and as they raced for the line they were side by side again. Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve had passed and re-passed so frequently over those last 5 laps that nobody could say how many times they had changed positions. The Ferrari took it by a quarter of a second and while it had all been happening Jean-Pierre Jabouille had quietly won the French Grand Prix, It marked the first Renault victory in a Grand Prix since 1906, the first ever Grand Prix victory by a turbo-charged engine and the first Grand Prix win for Jean-Pierre Jabouille.Browse through more illustrated items in our ebay shop (George Morgan Illustration)
