Description: Here we have a superb quality George II Sterling Silver Waiter or Small Salver. The waiter is circular with a pie crust rim and shell details standing on three hoof feet. The top is engraved with a design of scrolling acanthus leaves and flowers surrounding a central crest of a wyvern on a heraldic hat, which is a crest used by the Bromfleet family. The waiter was made in London by renowned silversmith Ebenezer Coker and dates to 1758. Ebenezer Coker was an important London silversmith through the middle years of the eighteenth century. He registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1738 and is particularly known for his candlesticks, flatware and salvers and waiters, all of consistently high quality. Both Thomas Chawner and John Lambe were his apprentices before going on to distinguished careers of their own. He remained in business into the 1770s. Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 265 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The waiter is 17cm / 6.7ins in diameter and stands 2.6cm / 1in high. It weighs in at a very substantial 210.2g / 7.4oz of solid Sterling Silver. The hallmarks, on the underside of the waiter, are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter C for 1758 and the distinctive E.C makers' mark for Ebenezer Coker.
