Description: I am a retired ObGyn and medical historian who has collected books and instruments for over 40 years. Age and downsizing have prompted me to pass along my items to younger collectors with the space to display them. As time permits, I will be listing approximately 300 books and over 100 instruments on eBay. This is an original 1875 Canadian edition of "The Physical Life of Woman. Advice to the Maiden, Wife, and Mother. by George H. Napheys. 308 pp. It is bound together with M. L. Holbrook's "Parturition Without Pain; a Code of Directions for Escaping from the Primal Curse". 82 pp. Hardbound in green cloth with gold stamping on the spine, and black stamping on the front cover. The cover shows moderate wear but is not torn The binding and pages are tight. There is a small clear, barely legible, owner tag (mine) on the inside front cover, and a small bit of brown gunk on the back cover. It measures ~ 7.5 x 5.5 x 1", and weighs ~ 1 lb. For its age it is in good to very good condition. Please look at the photos. Not much is known about George Henry Napheys (1842-1876) except that he attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia after the Civil War. He died at 34, possibly of tuberculosis. Martin Luther Holbrook (1831-1902) was a doctor associated with the natural hygiene and physical culture movement in the U.S. This book is typical of the mass produced medical information books aimed at the general public. They usually include pages of testimonials and are a mishmash of prevalent medical and popular knowledge and prejudices. It makes for fun reading. I will ship U.S.P.S. Media or Priority mail.
