Stock certificate signed in his first year as President of the Phillip Best Brewing Company, which would later become Pabst Blue Ribbon Stock Certificate signed: "Frdk Pabst" as President of Phillip Best Brewing Company, "Emil Schandein", and "Chas. Best Jr." 1p, 10x7. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1873 May 20. Certificate #22 for Emil Schauderie, owner of 1 share of company stock with a face value of $1,000. Engraved vignettes picture the company breweries. Surrender signature on verso, dated April 30, 1994. Brewer Frederick Pabst (1836-1904) immigrated from Germany with his parents in 1848, eventually becoming captain of a steamer on Lake Michigan. After he married the daughter of local brewer Phillip Best, Pabst was made a partner in that firm and contributed greatly to its success, becoming President in 1873. From 1888, the company bore Pabst's name, and it acquired the full title of Pabst Blue Ribbon after winning that award at the Chicago Columbian Exposition of 1893. Long marketed as "the beer that made Milwaukee famous", the brewery remained one of America's top-selling brands until the late 1970s, when a period of mismanagement caused its decline. Pabst Blue Ribbon, produced since 2001 by the Miller Brewing Company, remains popular in regional markets. Emil Schandein (1840-1888) married into the Best family as well, tying the knot with Lisette Schandein (1848-1905). He served as Vice President of the brewery until his death, when his wife became Vice President. Charles Best Jr. was one of Phillip Best's sons, named after his brother. Multiple mailing folds.
