Description: This is a lovely and Fine Antique Early California Impressionist Painting, Watercolor on Paper, by the esteemed early 20th century California plein air landscape painter and portrait artist, Frederick Carl Smith (1868 - 1955.) This artwork depicts a tranquil and meticulously painted sylvan landscape scene, likely in the High Sierra mountains, where the artist was known to frequently visit and paint the majestic scenery that he witnessed. Lushly rendered green foliage and tall, old trees command the top and edges of the scene, while a calm and placid greenish hued river is painted below, with delicate attention to each water ripple and pebble. Signed: "F. Carl Smith" in the lower right corner, and annotated: "Hickory," beneath the signature. I am unsure that this means, but perhaps you do? This piece likely dates to the early 1920's. Approximately 23 1/4 x 28 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 11 1/2 x 17 inches. Very good condition for nearly a century of age, with mild scuffing and scratches to the original gilded wood frame, and some light waviness to the painted paper canvas from being suspended in this original frame for so many decades (please see photos.) The close-up photos appear lighter due to an unavoidable quirk relating to the iPhone camera. The most accurate judgment of color can be ascertained from Photos 1 - 3. Acquired from an old collection in Pasadena, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
