Description: Cherokee pottery vase signed Tooni, G W Y, which translates to Tsa-la-gi, meaning Cherokee in the native language. 4.75" high; 3.5" rim; 2.75" base. Incised or stamped vertical decorations are almost spiral. Made by traditional methods, but less of the fire blackened areas than most Cherokee pottery. Tooni family has a long crafting history. A jug by Lydia Toonigh (Tooni) was collected for the Smithsonian in 1908 according to on-line information. Currently, brothers Matthew and John Tooni are storyteller and flutist.
