Description: Charles Alvah Smith : Vermont Maker of Unusual Wood Clocks Charles A. Smith of Brattleboro, Vermont, whose work is chronicled here, produced – in volume – a wall timepiece at least equal to, or possibly better than the products of the historically recognized makers who worked between 1745 and 1845, the heyday of the wood-movement clock. Smith’s designs, handcrafting and manufacturing methods are as interesting and worth studying as the techniques and methods of the earlier makers. While their timepieces are avidly sought, Smith’s are considered treasures by those fortunate to have one. The quality of his work is evident to anyone who examines an example. He was also prolific. His output of over 600 pieces is exceeded only by perhaps two dozen or so of the hundred-odd makers who produced wood-movement timepieces in that earlier area. Though Smith’s history is relatively, recent, there are still gaps to be filled. It is hoped that the publication of this yet-incomplete story will bring forth more information from the public, other recollections of the man and data about some of the missing examples or about that body of still-missing plans and drawings. In the history of wooden-movement clockmaking in this country, Charles A. Smith shares a special place with a handful of others. He was the complete clockmaker, making the entire clock: design, movement, case, dial, weights, hardward, and embellishments. ISBN Not issued Format Paperback Author John M.
