Description: CATTLE EMPIRE The fabulous story of the 3,000,000-acre XIT1949 1st ed, William Morrow & Company, New York, HC/DJ. Author Lewis Nordyke273 Pages w/ b&w photos This is the first authoritative account of the biggest ranch in the history of the US. Stretching for nearly 200 miles from north to south, the XIT lay in ten Texas counties. But its affairs reached out to Chicago, London, and the halls of Congress. The XIT Ranch encompassed more than three million acres across ten counties on the Llano Estacado in western Texas. Considered the largest cattle ranch in the world, the XIT also leased land in the Dakotas and in Montana. The XIT stretched for more than 200 miles in the Texas Panhandle and had 575 miles of outside fence. The ranch, which employed as many as 100 cowboys, was organized into seven divisions with a headquarters at Channing. The brand XIT was the idea of Ab Blocker, a trail driver who persuaded management that any good brand should be easy to make with a simple iron, but also be difficult to brand over by rustlers. Lewis Thaddeus Nordyke, (1905–1960). Newspaperman and author born on December 25, 1905, at Turkey Creek, five miles east of Cottonwood, Texas, in Callahan County. Lewis, reared on a farm called Nubbin Ridge, was one of seven children. His oldest brother, Clarence, became a Texas Ranger. During his career as a journalist, Nordyke was also a columnist for the Dallas Times-Herald. He served on the Texas Youth Council and the State Prison and Paroles board. Nordyke wrote five nonfiction books about Texas life: Cattle Empire: The Fabulous Story of the 3,000,000 Acre XIT (1949); Great Roundup: The Story of Texas and Southwestern Cowmen (1955); John Wesley Hardin: The Life of a Texas Outlaw (1957); The Truth About Texas (1957), informal essays about Texas regions; and Nubbin Ridge (1960). He died after a heart attack in Marfa on July 8, 1960, and was buried in the Llano Cemetery, Amarillo.
