Description: [FINE PRESS, CHELONIIDAE PRESS, ALAN JAMES ROBINSON] ROBINSON, Alan James (Artist)MOORE, Suzanne (Calligraphy) "GENIUS IN THE SPERM WHALE" On offer here is an ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR & CALLIGRAPHY WORK ON PAPER BY ALAN JAMES ROBINSON & SUZANNE MOORE. The work is rendered on a sheet measuring 15 x 22 in on thick wove 'arches' type stock. (mat measuring 21.5 in x 30 in) The original calligraphy work which reproduces a quote from Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick' is nicely executed by Suzanne Moore rendered in mostly black ink with the 'SPERM WHALE' lettering in gold as shown. The original watercolor painting of the sperm whale by Robinson is done in dark blue and black aquatint. Both have signed the work in pencil below. The work has been nicely matted and shrink-wrapped likely since creation and has been preserved in pristine condition. This being a singular 'original' work there is no edition or number as we believe this was the only example of this project completed. Perhaps others of a similar 'whaling' theme were done, but we could find no other work by either Robinson or Moore of a similar nature. A fine and important collecting opportunity. Provenance: This item from the inventory of notable Southern California Bookseller Richard ‘Dick’ Callaway of San Pedro, CA. Callaway sought and handled whaling titles, fine press and illustrated books (including Alan James Robinson / Cheloniidae Press), African Americana and most commonly, English classical authors. Among the English works, Dick seemingly always had a number of Dickens, Trollope & Thackeray titles in stock in addition to items related to the Dickensian illustrators (George Cruikshank & Hablot K. Browne aka ‘Phiz’). Additionally, Callaway was an important dealer of autographs and manuscripts of within the high spots of literature and government both in Europe and America. Upon her retirement in 1999, Callaway acquired a substantial amount of the inventory of Doris Harris Autographs and our recent acquisition reflects the depth and breadth Mrs. Harris’ inventory represented across her 4 decades thriving in the trade. Some of the inventory we acquired hasn’t been worked since the mid to late1970’s.Please email any questions -
