Walter "Blackie" Collins was the top knife designer of the late 20th ans early 21st centuries. He held over 60 patents on knife mechanisms as well as many design patents. He was a member of the Cutlery Hall of Fame, founding member of the Knife Makers Guild, and founding publisher and editor of Blade Magazine and a world-renowned knife maker who worked as a designer for all the major knife manufactures including Case and Gerber. While at Gerber, he designed most of the most popular knives made by the firm, including the Gator series and the Gerber Tool. Blackie left Gerber in the mid-1990’s to become a partner in the Meyerco firm. He was the first designer to see the practicality and utility of using something other than the standard bone or wood and complicated steel assembly for folding knives. The first design, the Gerber L.S.T. (Light, Strong, Tough) has sold three million so far and is still a staple in the Gerber catalog 40 years later. “That was the first molded Zytel handle,” Collins said. “Now, it’s the most copied knife in this (20th) century in the United States.”It comes with an interesting story. “Pete Gerber handed me a knife in their line and said, ‘Give it some moxie,’ ” said Blackie of the 1983 meeting. “I asked what else he wanted and he said, ‘Make it easy to manufacture,’ and I took it from 26 parts to six parts.” He also was the first to use Cordura sheaths rather than the usual leather. Although his strength was knife design — he designed for more than 20 manufacturers — Collins also had other innovations. He designed a trigger lock, called Cease Fire, that fits nearly all rifles except some lever actions, and he designed a shooter’s screwdriver that is selling well, but knives were his living. After several years as chief designer at Gerber, Blackie was homesick for Carolina and moved his workshop to the town of North, South Carolina. Later, he joined Meyerco as a partner but continued a close relationship with Gerber. Meyerco knives continue to be made in the same factories as Gerber. *I used to be able to tell you the name of this onlay. Unfortunately, the name has been acquired by a European holding company. If I tell you what it is, their agent will file a complaint with eBay and have my listing canceled. Suffice to say, it is similar to black rubber but not affected by DEET and is attracted to your skin but not dust or dirt. Your grip will actually increase if your hands are slightly wet or bloody.About the steel: 440 has been called "the industry standard" and "The ideal compromise" between ease of sharpening and the ability to hold to hold an edge. 440 is hard enough to hold an edge but soft enough to sharpen easily with a common whetstone. 440C is a similar steel with a higher carbon content which enables it to hold an edge even better. Unfortunately, the other knife companies like Buck®, Case®, and Gerber® have chosen to switch to the lower carbon steel 420HC. The HC stands for High Carbon but it is lower than 440. The reason for their switch is that 420HC costs less than 440. This knife can be hard to sharpen with an Aluminum Oxide or ceramic stone but holds its edge much longer. A diamond stone is recommended OR use our Handi Sharpener. The Tungsten Carbide blades easily sharpen this steel and center your edge, eliminating the main reason people complain about being unable to sharpen a knife. ® The trademarks are the property of the respective companies.
