Bell System Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Riveting Hammer

Description: The Bell System purchased high quality tools for use by its employees and each tool was listed in what must have been massive volumes, Bell System Practices, where everything from Reading Glasses to Rubber Jugs and Pliers to Tweezers were defined and described in detail. Such is true of Riveting Hammer which we found listed and described in both the 1952 and 1968 versions. Bell System Practices, Section G82.320.1. Issue 1, July 1952 AT&T Co Standard; Hammers and Hatchets; Description and Maintenance "2.07 Riveting Hammers are available in four ounce, seven ounce and twelve ounce weights. The four ounce hammer is for central office forces. The seven ounce is intended primarily for use by the installation and repair forces but may also be used by the cable splicing forces for light operations. The twelve ounce hammer which has a tempered head is suitable for use with the large chipping knife." The same description appears again in Section 081-745-102,Issue 2, October 1968 AT&T Standard Hammers, Hatchets and Axes. The Hammer was made by Vaughn & Bushnell. Their logo is stamped into the head on one side (see images) and “Bell System” into the opposite side, though it is not nearly as deeply stamped (see images). Because the stampings are upside-down to what is considered usual, we think the handle has been replaced. In Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Co. catalogs from 1927 and 1942, the Brand Stamping is pictured in what would be considered “right side up”. (see “Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Co.: Catalogue No.24 by Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Co. 1927”, https://archive.org/details/vaughan-and-bushnell-1924-catalog/page/14/mode/2up?view=theater and “Vaughan Hammers : Catalog and Price List : 1942 by Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Co.”, https://archive.org/details/vaughan-and-bushnell-1942-catalog-hammers/page/4/mode/2up. The Handle is textured and has a hole in it (see images). Neither of these appear in the Bell description of the Hammer, nor in the 1927 Catalog, further supporting the idea that the handle has been replaced. Nonetheless, the Handle is firmly fitted. The descriptions of the Hammer by Bell and V & B identifies it as a Number 1, 7 Ounce Hammer. The Hammer shows use, but no evidence of misuse or abuse (see images). It could be returned to service or added to a Show-and-Tell Collection. We make no guess about the age of the Hammer as we were unable to locate any Vaughn & Bushnell authorities. We will ship the Hammer by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following payment.
