This is a genuine antique book Illustration from the “Exploration’s and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practical and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean” report. It was detached by the previous owner. The print is deeply evocative, rich in history, and brimming with character. This print was issued as part of The Pacific Railroad Surveys Reports of the 1850s, undertaken to gather information on the vast new territories that had been acquired in western North America, and determine possible routes for a transcontinental railroad. The report, entitled “Exploration’s and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practical and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean” was rich in geographical, zoological, botanical, geological, and natural history observations and included topographical maps, pictures, lithographs, and technical data. This print titled: “Hell Gate - Entrance to Cadotte's Pass from the west” shows a mountainous landscape with two Native American men, one standing and one on horseback in the foreground. The title for this print reflects Stevens party's decision that Cadotte's Pass would be the preferred route for a railroad through this part of the Rockies. (Isaac I. Stevens led the northern-most survey along the 47th to 49th parallels). MEASUREMENTS: The page that the scene is printed on measures approximately: 11-1/2" x 8-1/4". CONDITION: The print is in good condition, captivating to look at. It does, however, show expected signs of age: yellowing, heavy foxing, edge wear, and darkening around the edges.
