Antique Large White Westerwald Etched Beer Stein/Pitcher c.1860s The stein presented was made around 1860s and is very well preserved for the age. Les Paul in his book "Early Stoneware Steins" presents this type of steins on page 385. He states that "steins without cobalt decorations are not found so frequently in Westerwald as those with cobalt or manganese decorations, but they became quite popular in the second half of the 18th century." Instead of blue or purple decorations these pieces were decorated with etched, incised or stamped patterns. This particular stein is decorated with a beautiful etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. The lid is pewter with acanthus-shaped the thublift and 3-ring opened type hinge. This particular pewter settings were used in the late 1860s - early 1870s. As I mentioned before the stein is in a very good condition, there are some small manufacturing impurities - please look at my pictures - and some age-related wear, but no chips or cracks - a rare condition for such a large piece. It is 13.5" to the top of the thumblift, a little over 2L capacity. The blue glaze mark on the back of the stein is most likely the capacity mark of 2 liters. I guarantee my dating and description! I will take the stein back and refund all the expenses if there are any discrepancies.
