The whimsically illustrated hardcover book is written for children from age 5 to 10, but it appeals to cat lovers and art lovers of all ages. Based on a real-life experience, the book tells the story of an American girl named Anna who visits the famous Russian museum in St. Petersburg in search of a cat to draw. A short history. Fifty cats live in the State Hermitage Museum. In fact, cats have lived there for more than 250 years. Russian Empress Catherine the Great gave the Hermitage Cats official status, issuing a decree that called them "Guardians of the Picture Galleries." In the early days the Empress's cats slept in baskets used for carrying firewood. Sometimes they rode in imperial carriages on velvet cushions. The cats fulfilled their official duty by keeping the Winter Palace free of mice and rats. Over the years the museum expanded to fill six buildings on Palace Square. Several courtyards and a complex system of basement rooms and corridors connect the buildings, offering warmth and protection to the cats in cold weather. In summer the Hermitage Cats can be seen in the outdoor courtyards. Although they are not allowed in the picture galleries, the Hermitage Cats still catch their fair share of mice and rats. The museum staff take care of today's Hermitage cats, giving them food, veterinary care and loving attention including the annual Day of Cats celebration. Profits from the sale of Anna's story are given to the Hermitage to help pay for veterinary care and food for the Hermitage Cats. (A5)
