We have been listening to shortwave radio for 50 years and been radio enthusiasts for 50+ years and are really stunned by what this small little radio can deliver. We want to take some time and explain what makes this Raddy RF75A a different type of radio that is especially appealing to a casual listener or emergency prepper. It is probably worth mentioning that in our household we have both "his" and "hers" radios so that both of us can enjoy our personal radio and not compete with who can use it when both of us want to have access to it.Our first encounter with this radio was that we were impressed by the packaging and the entirety of the ensemble. The RF75A comes in a very nice box. When you lift off the cover, the radio is seated in a plastic foam holder to prevent damage during shipment. Upon removing the radio, you will find two user manuals. The first user manual is a radio manual and covers all the features, options, and operations. The second user manual is information on how to download an app that will enable you to operate the radio using your cell phone. (We will discuss this app operation in more detail below) Once you remove the manuals, you come to a third layer in the box containing a wrist strap, earphones, USB charging cable, a 9.5 foot wire to extend the antenna for better shortwave reception, and finally at the bottom of the box, you will find a carry bag to store the RF75A radio and all the accessory items for both convenience and to deter loss. This radio is a self-contained and complete entertainment package. You can listen to a variety of listening bands.... (AM, shortwave, FM & VHF), use the radio to play your cell phone via the Bluetooth connection, or insert a micro SD card to play hours, days, and weeks of music. What is your listening interest .... is it shortwave? Well, you have access to all the main shortwave bands. The small telescopic antenna provides signal reception from the larger stations. If you want to hear weaker stations or improve reception, the Raddy comes with a 9.5 foot wire antenna that clips onto the base of the small whip antenna. You extend this wire out and in a direction that will peak the signal that you are attempting to receive. There is a loop at the end of this wire to fasten over a door knob, a cabinet knob, or the end of a curtain rod.When tuning shortwave, there is often a need to move from band to band with some speed. Since the radio does not have direct entry for the frequency (direct frequency input is available on the phone app, though), you press the button to move through the frequencies. If you hold the button down a couple of seconds, it will rapidly scan to reach that distant receiving band. Alternately, if you wish, you can have the radio scan frequencies and store them for quick and easy access. The radio also has memories for your favorite stations or for quick recall on any of AM, FM, shortwave or VHF.If you like FM radio, this RF75A delivers these signals too. We found that while the radio does generally fine with FM reception, the telescopic antenna does not tilt and so when listening to more distant FM stations, we did have to place the radio on its back and rotate it to maximize reception. Placing the radio upright on a windowsill also improved reception on all bands. Tuning the weather band channels enables you to pick up local NOAA weather reports and this can be helpful for camping or if you are out of a cell reception area. The radio can also be set to alert you if an emergency weather broadcast is transmitted.This RF75A also hears VHF signals. To test this out, we tuned to our local 911 public service call-out frequency of 154.070 MHz. In our rural area, the 911 emergency base is about 13 miles away and we received signals with no difficulty enabling us to hear a variety of EMS, fire, and other emergency transmissions. In fact, since this frequency offered the most transmissions in VHF, we let our RF75A set on this frequency so that when a local fire department siren alerted, we could power on the radio to hear the reason for the alarm. In this manner, the radio was used on VHF like a priority channel on a scanner.If you fatigue of listening to radio signals, you can use the Bluetooth on the radio to play music from your cell phone. You may wonder the reason for this process when you can play the music directly on your phone? Well, the RF75A has amazing audio. In fact, this is one of the things that enabled us to fall in love with this device. The tiny speaker is not buzzy.... it is clear and it is LOUD.... or it can be turned up loud to be heard nicely in any household room. The designers at Raddy installed a high efficiency small speaker that presents audio that you would expect from a much larger radio. If you look at the rear panel of the radio, you will see that they made a special size accommodation in the cabinet to accept the larger thickness of the speaker rather than install a cheaper tinny speaker as most manufacturers would have chosen to do.Additionally, since this radio can accept a Micro SD card up to 256 GB, you could literally store about 50,000 songs in the memory (the SD card is NOT included). This means that you could, if you were inclined, load 50,000 songs onto a 256GB SD card and then enjoy 2500 hours (104 days) of uninterrupted continuous listening except for charging the radio every few hours. That said, it is important to know that the music is not indexed and so each song is played by sequence. You can skip songs via the radio's buttons, but you do not have a method to search and play specific songs. (you can see songs being played on the phone app) When playing the songs, you can choose a tilt to the audio by selecting normal one of five different equalizer modes. Our preference on the equalizer is using the "jazz" option.While this radio has a variety of features not anticipated due to its miniature size, two of them stand out to us. The first is the outstanding audio from the tiny speaker that can be turned up loud without the normal buzzing and distortion that you would expect. The second feature is that this radio can be controlled by a phone app. It took us a few minutes to figure out the process. Perhaps this will be more direct for you. Basically, you download the app, connect the Bluetooth for the radio on your phone, then connect to the Bluetooth used by the app. Once we managed this process, subsequent connections were a snap. When the app for the RF75A is open and connected, you have complete control of the functions on the radio such as band selection, tuning, volume, and equalizer control. You can use the app when playing music from the SD card and the app will display the song being played. Additionally, the app can be used to activate the flashlight. Yes, this radio has a flashlight on the top that puts out nice illumination should you require such. For instance, if the Raddy radio carried in a vehicle glove box for emergencies, this light would provide illumination to change a automobile tire in the dark. Utilizing the phone app to control the radio is quite fun. Tuning is much easier as you can enter a frequency directly and can control the radio remotely. As an example, you would be able to place the radio on the windowsill to improve radio reception, but then be able to control the volume or change the frequency without needing to stand up from your easy chair.Another feature that we would like to mention is that the phone app enables recording of whatever radio stations you are tuned to. This feature does require an SD Micro card to be installed and the playback can also be on the radio. The duration of the recording is limited only by the size of the memory available on your SD micro card.As you can tell from our personal experiences with this RF75A, this radio can be a fun device to deliver entertainment.... or a nice radio for the bugout bag to grab on the way out the door during an emergency.
