Description: If tall grass gently flowing with the current of your aquarium is a look you strive for, than look no further than my favorite background grass, Vallisneria spiralis. 3 bunches of 3 plants, that's 9 plants for only $6.99 (see "What you get" for the fine print) Description Vallisneria spiralis goes by many names. Eel grass, tape grass, or straight vallisneria, to name a few. It posses narrow, linear leaves that display a variety of colors, depending on the nutrients in the substrate. In most cases, it will display a deep green. I have seen it produce red leaves in iron rich substrate like Seachem flourite. The Valisneria genus are monocots, meaning each plant posses separate male and female reproductive parts. The male flowers form atop long, spiral stalks that break away from the plant and float on the surface. The female flower remains attached to each plant, and once fertilized will curl towards the plants base to protect the growing fruit. The curling of the female flower is where the species name "spiralis" comes from. In the aquarium, this reproductive method rarely happens. V. Spiralis mostly propegates in the aquarium by sending out runners, which is how they form thick, dense carpets across the aquarium. They spread quite rapidly if the aquarium substrate is nutrient rich. When allowed to grow thick & dense forests, they provide ample hiding locations for fish fry and shrimp alike. As they grow their root systems and send out runners, they assist in aerating the soil and utilizing any nitrogenous waste built up in it. What you Get 3 bunches of the finest Italian val I can pick out of my aquarium, (see picture 1 for a picture of the aquarium, not to be confused with the short grass, that is dwarf sagitaria and not for sale, yet).one bunch would be 2-3 individual plants, depending on size/quality of the stock available. Care GuideItalian Val requires a nutrient rich substrate. I have seen success with Eco-Complete, Seachem flourite black sand, and mostly potting soil. Italian val grows rampant in my potting soil tanks, and quite well in others. Add a root tab under them to assist with any deficiencies. Add a new one every 6 months or so. Temperature 64° - 82° F (18° - 28° C) pH: 6.5 - 7.6 (from experience, I think this can easily go above 8 without issue)Lighting: moderate to High (Lean towards high if aquarium is deep)Care is easy, please contact with any other questions. Invasive Species Warning:V. Spiralis is considered an invasive species in New Zealand and could likely spread across other ecosystems. Please be careful disposing any plant tissue, else you may inadvertently spread V. spiralis into your local ponds and rivers. Disclaimer:I have many types of snails in all of my tanks as they provide a critical role for the ecosystem. I also have duckweed and other assorted floating plants that my fish love to eat in-between feedings. I will do my best to remove any of these common pests, it is only natural that some may slip through the cracks, thus I cannot be responsible for spreading either of these extremely common and beneficial hitchikers.
