On November 3, 1994 in New York, NY, the U.S. Postal Service issued this pane of 4 Bureau of Engraving and Printing gummed $2 stamps to honor the 100th anniversary of printing U.S. stamps. The top center features an engraved image of the BEP's original home, a red brick building at the corner of 14th St & Independence Ave in Washington, DC. Each stamp with the image of James Madison is a reproduction of the original 100-year-old classic #262 stamp. The origin of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) can be traced to 1862, when six people working in the basement of the Main Treasury Building separated and sealed $1 and $2 notes printed by private companies. The following year, the Bureau printed its first notes, and began printing stamps some 30 years later. In 1994, the Bureau produced 35 million notes per day, almost half of which were $1 bills. The BEP also produces around 36 billion stamps each year for post offices throughout the United States. Scott # 2875 Free Shipping in the U.S. by USPS First Class
