This is an upright, multi-stemmed shrub with a compact growth habit that typically matures over time to 10-12' tall and as wide. It is noted for producing abundant and impressive, shrub-covering, rosy-mauve flowers in early spring . When in flower it really is a sight to behold, with its bright rosy-mauve flowers so tightly packed on the stems as to obscure the bark. The floral display is all the more impressive because you'll find flowers solid from the branches all the way to the ground. A cold infusion of the roots and inner bark have been used to treat various chest complaints including whooping cough and congestion . Edible parts of Redbud: Flowers - raw or pickled. A nice refreshing acid taste, the flowers are rich in vitamin C and make a pleasant addition to salads. They can also be used as a condiment. The unopened buds are pickled or used as a caper substitute. Other uses : The bark of young shoots is used in basket making.
