Covering the Athletics of 1956, the new DVD shows the club at old Connie Mack Field, West Palm Beach in Spring Training 1956, and follows the team at home and on the road throughout the season, with great shots of other American League ballparks, such as Briggs Stadium in Detroit, Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park and Griffith Stadium in Washington. At home in Kansas City, the team is shown in action at old Municipal Stadium, with great color camera shots of one of the old ballparks of a bygone era. Promotions of ’56 are touched on and a special look ‘behind the scenes’ shows members of the front office, including owner Arnold Johnson, business manager Parke Carroll, young farm director Hank Peters, P.R. Director Gordon Smith, broadcasters Merle Harmon and Larry Ray and Community Relations Director Connie Mack III. You get a peek into the clubhouse at trainer Jim Ewell working on Joe DeMastri and other players before a game. A’s players of ’56 are shown throughout the DVD, including Jim Finigan, Lou Skizas (who made the All-Star Rookie Team), Hal Smith, Lou Kretlow, Tim Thompson and young rookie Jim Cox just up from Columbus, making his major league debut. There are beautiful closeup shots of other A’s such as Gus Zernial, Mike Baxes, young Clete Boyer, Art Ditmar, Alex Kellner, Hector Lopez, Vic Power and Harry “Suitcase” Simpson. Veteran Enos Slaughter is shown in action, in spring training and in a special segment at home with his wife reading The Sporting News and drinking his “favorite soft drink”, Coca Cola. Other highlights include the players stepping off the bus at Yankee Stadium, Opening Day at Briggs Stadium Detroit and the sweep of the series against the Tigers, and the home opener at Municipal Stadium against Marty Marion’s Chicago White Sox. The A’s set a record by scoring 14 runs in one inning against the Sox, and all after two are out! Manager Lou Boudreau is shown, as well as many players on other teams such as A.L. batting champ Al Kaline, Ted Williams, Herb Score, Bob Lemon, Rocky Colavito, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Bob Turley, Jerry Coleman and Jim Rivera.
