It is a comprehensive English summary of the main results of criminal anthropology, a field of study which was scarcely known at the time of publication. Criminal anthropology is a field of offender profiling, based on perceived links between the nature of crime and the personality or physical appearance of the offender. Although similar physiognomy and phrenology, the term "criminal anthropology" is generally reserved for the works of the Italian school of criminology of the late 19th (Cesare Lombroso, Enrico Ferri, Raffaele Garofalo and Lorenzo Tenchini). Lombroso thought that criminals were born with detectable inferior physiological differences. He popularized the notion of "born criminal" and thought that criminality was a case of atavism or hereditary disposition. This book features actual photos of prisoners from Elmira Reformatory. Elmira, founded in 1876, was controversially run by superintendent Zebulon Brockway. Acting with rehabilitative aims, Brockway instilled strict discipline along the lines of military training. Although accused of brutality for his corporal punishment in 1893, Brockway was acknowledged as a leader in his field. COLU1914ABCB12/23 - HK1003
