Large lithographed map, hand-colored in outline, in 2 segments measuring about 25 x 32 1/2 inches with each segment linen-backed and bound separately onto front and rear boards of case. These segments form the western portion of the map extending on the east from the Hudson River, including the western half of lower Manhattan, to Plainfield, New Brunswick, Pompton and Monroe on the west; and the Raritan River on the south to Croton Point and Tuxedo Park on the north. This region includes the major cities of Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Paterson, Nyack, Perth-Amboy, and Rahway, plus Staten Island, and numerous smaller towns and localities. Away from the city centers, the map is incredibly detailed showing probably thousands of individual residences, each with an owner name. County boundaries are shown in bold color outline with townships (?) also color outlined and named. Distances in miles from lower downtown Manhattan are shown by a faint system of concentric circles. The Statue of Liberty, dedicated only in the previous year (1886), is marked simply as Bartholdi Statue on Bedloe's Island. This a great attractive and information-packed late 19th century map of the New Jersey region near New York City. Condition: Very good to near fine overall with minor shelf wear to covers. The map segments are very lightly toned consistent with age and have trivial tiny breaks at a few of the fold intersections. A well preserved map.
