Description: You are bidding on a splendid antique hardcover book titled The Poetical Works of Samuel Rogers. The book is Elegantly Illustrated with steel plate engravings. Published by E. H. Butler & Co., 1857. This is a magnificent volume bound in blue full leather with ornate gilt designs. The book is illustrated, including fabulous steel-plate plates! Samuel Rogers (30 July 1763 – 18 December 1855) was an English poet, during his lifetime one of the most celebrated, although his fame has long since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of these and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources for information about London artistic and literary life, with which he was intimate, and which he used his wealth to support. He made his money as a banker and was also a discriminating art collector. The book features full leather binding with profuse use of gold designs. The spine has five raised bands with gold lettering and ornate gold compartmentalised designs. There is gold ornamentation on the outside edge of covers and even has a lovely gilt perimeter on inside of covers! The covers are securely attached with no cracking or splitting of hinges. The corners and edges show some wear and scuffing. The pages tightly bound with some foxing to some pages, although most pages have none. The outside edges of pages have gilt edge. Book even has a bound-in silk ribbon bookmarker. Book shows some wear but remains in overall near-very good condition. It's a beauty! Would make a nice addition to a collection. Great gift idea!
