They were launched to regain access to Christian pilgrimage sites in the Holy Land, which had been permitted by the Abbasid Arabs but were banned by the Seljuk Turks in 1071 when they took Jerusalem from the Arabs. They began in 1095, also responding to a request from the Eastern Emperor, who was worried about the attitude of the Turks. The Eastern Romans (called "Byzantines" since the 16th century) spoke Greek, were Christians, but remained attached to the Pentarchy and did not recognize Rome's primacy since the Filioque dispute in 1054 (separation of the Eastern and Western Churches). The Crusaders made no lasting conquests, lost interest in the matter once Saladin restored access to pilgrimages except for those who had settled there, and ultimately weakened Eastern Christians more than they helped them.
